Plan around the heat. The National Weather Service puts the heat index at 102 in both Beaumont and Port Arthur on Saturday and Sunday, with scattered afternoon storms and rainfall totals under a tenth of an inch. Morning is the comfortable half of Saturday, and most of what's outdoors below starts before noon.
What's Happening Friday Night in Southeast Texas?
The Jefferson Theatre, 345 Fannin in Beaumont, runs West Side Story as its Classic Movie Night, doors at 6 PM and film at 7. Fiesta 58 Fills the Bob Bowers Civic Center Saturday
The Mexican Heritage Society's Fiesta 58 opens its doors at 8:45 AM on Saturday, September 12, at the Bob Bowers Civic Center, 3401 Cultural Center Drive in Port Arthur. Folklorico dancers, mariachi, a Parade of Costumes and food carry the day.

The Southeast Texas Fishing Classic runs off Pleasure Island, 520 Pleasure Pier Boulevard in Port Arthur. Lines in at 6 AM, check-in closes at 9, weigh-in closes at 1 PM, awards at 2 and the event closes at 3. Entry is $65 per angler, boat or bank; anglers 17 and under fish free alongside a parent holding a $10 spectator pass or their own entry. The board runs past $5,000 in prizes, with $1,500 to the Grand Champion and $500 for speckled trout.
Inland, the Rotary Club of Vidor Community 5K Run/Walk starts at 9 AM at Claiborne West Park, 14810 Interstate 10 in Vidor. The 5K is $25 and the Kids 1K is $10 for ages 10 and under.
The Bottom Line: Redfish money on Sabine Lake, or a 5K that finishes before the afternoon storm window opens.

Also in Beaumont, St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 680 Calder Avenue, holds Hymn Fest at 5 PM with the Beaumont Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. It is the first Hymn Fest back on the church's Aeolian-Skinner organ, Opus 1391, after a two-year restoration, and a reception follows. Free, and it wraps at 6:30.
