Here’s what’s up in SETX,

Beaumont's Meals on Wheels program has more than 150 seniors sitting on a waitlist right now — and the costs squeezing the organization aren't letting up. Meanwhile, a brand-new cancer center is coming to Beaumont this summer so SETX patients can stop making that Houston drive, Port Arthur heads to the polls this Saturday in four contested city council races, and this weekend is stacked with free community events across the Golden Triangle. Oh, and we've got pho.

Today's newsletter is brought to you by Tailored Financial Solutions.

Let's get into it. 👇

📰 THE BIG NEWS

Meals on Wheels Is Stretched Thin — and 150+ SETX Seniors Are Waiting 🍽️

Rising gas and food prices have pushed Beaumont's Meals on Wheels program to its limits, forcing it to put more than 150 seniors on a waitlist. Demand hasn't slowed — as inflation squeezes household budgets, more older residents are turning to the program for the meals and transportation services that keep them connected to grocery stores, dialysis appointments, and cancer treatments. Program leaders are warning that further delivery cuts are on the table if costs continue climbing.

For many of the seniors on that list, a meal delivery isn't a convenience — it's a daily lifeline. The program runs largely on volunteer drivers and community donations, and right now both are needed. If you have a few hours a week or a few dollars to spare, Meals on Wheels in Beaumont can put them to immediate use.

💡 The bottom line: 150+ of your neighbors are waiting to be fed — and this program needs the community to show up before more cuts happen.

This is a community-led effort built on mentorship, not enforcement. Read more →

 🍽️ FOOD CORNER

🍜 Sweet Basil Vietnamese Noodle House — Beaumont

Courtesy of Sweet Basil Vietnamese Noodle House (Google Business Profile)

Calvin and Be Pham grew up right here in Southeast Texas, went to school locally, and came home to do something for their community — opening Beaumont's first Vietnamese pho restaurant in 2017. The menu reads like a genuine love letter to SETX: rich, customizable pho, of course, but also Vietnamese-style Cajun Crawfish in garlic butter sauce and Hot Mess Fries loaded with ribeye, sweet soy, and spicy aioli. Calvin keeps it simple: "We focus on fresh ingredients." With 241 Yelp reviews and a 4.4 on TripAdvisor, the community has been saying yes ever since.

😎 Spring Paddling on Village Creek — Before the Summer Heat Hits

Late April and early May is the sweet spot for paddling in Southeast Texas — water levels are good, the cypress trees are leafed out, and the temperatures haven't crossed into "why am I outside" territory yet. Village Creek State Park in Lumberton puts you on one of the cleanest blackwater streams in the Big Thicket region, winding through longleaf pine forests and pitcher plant bogs that look genuinely prehistoric. The creek is calm enough for beginners in kayaks or canoes, and the birding along the way is some of the best in East Texas this time of year. Canoe and kayak rentals are available at the park — no experience required.

The park sits at 8459 TX-327 in Lumberton; day-use fees are $5/person. Go early on weekends.
